Celebrating With Flowers [article from Articleranks]

Celebrating With Flowers

Over the course of a year the vast majority of us will be required to attend various events with in the family or friend circle, on the odd occasion these could be a one off event such as a funeral or a wedding, but many of these will be a yearly occasion such as a birthday or anniversary, what ever event you attend this year flowers can be given as a gift and are appropriate to celebrate just about any special occasion. Having said all this there are two occasions when flowers have long been a traditional gift to give and these are of course for funerals and birthdays, flowers have been given at these times to celebrate life but in two completely different ways, it's hard to think of a similar gift that can cover both spectrums of life.

Birthday flowers are perhaps the most traditional gift to give as a birthday present with flowers being a staple gift for many women on their birthdays, many people dont know that there are appropriate types of flowers to give depending on the month of the year with Roses being appropriate for June and Primroses being appropriate for February. It is widely thought that birthday celebrations started in the Roman Empire and along with the first birthday celebration, the Romans were also the first people to give specific flowers depending on the month of the year, its no surprise considering that the Romans also widely used flowers when honouring their gods during religious ceremonies and of course the variety of flower would have depended on the growing season.

In contrast to birthday flowers funeral flowers are a popular choice to give to the bereaved families of those who have suffered a loss as a symbol of compassion and condolence, however, flowers have been used at funerals for many years for a much more practical reason. Today we use modern mortuaries and morgues to hold the bodies of the deceased till the time of the funeral and modern refrigeration units and techniques help to slow the decomposition of the body, however flowers were used extensively in the past to mast the unpleasant odours during a funeral service.
